Parentage is NOT known for certain.

Y-DNA evidence indicates that these Dorseys are not related (in the male line) to the Norman Darcy or D'Arcy families. The haplotype is wrong - R1b rather than E3b - and they are probably, in fact, of Irish extraction (O'Dorcey or O'Dorchaidhe). How long ago the family bailed out of Munster or Connacht, and whether they modified the family name to "Darcy" as protective coloration, is unknown.

• Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers was born circa 1565.2 He was the son of John Darcy, 2nd Baron Darcy of Chiche and Frances Rich.2,3 He married Mary Kitson, daughter of Sir Thomas Kitson and Lady Elizabeth Cornwallis. He died on 25 February 1639/40, without surviving male issue.4

• When Sir Thomas Kitson died on 11 September 1540, he left Hengrave and all his other property to his wife, Dame Margaret (née Donnington). With her he had a posthumous son, afterwards Sir Thomas Kitson, and four daughters, Katherine, Dorothy, Frances and Anne. Just two months after her first husband's death, Dame Margaret married Sir Richard Long (c.1494-1546) of Shengay, Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII. The marriage settlement of Dame Margaret and her third husband, John Bourchier, 2nd Earl of Bath, in 1548, gave her complete control over the extensive personal property she brought into their marriage, including the right to devise it by will should she predecease him. Hengrave eventually passed down the female Kitson line, and on the death of Elizabeth Kitson in 1625 the house was inherited by her daughter Mary Kitson, who had married Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers. By her granddaughter Penelope Darcy’s marriage to Sir John Gage, 1st Baronet, the house passed into the Gage family.

• This marriage turned out a most unhappy one : what Sir Harbottle Grimston called "peevish jealousies" on the part of her husband, and haughty pride of the wife, led to differences, which ended in a separation in 1594, and they both lived for more than forty years afterwards.

But Lord Darcy was alive and kicking, and he afterwards himself found favour at Court, and was made Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, and on the 5th July, 1621, created Viscount Colchester, with remainder to the afore-said Sir Thomas Savage, Baronet, of Rochsavage (who had married his eldest daughter), and their issue, with a grant of £8 per annum out of the fee-farm rent of the town of Colchester. Darcy was one of the mourners at the funeral of James I., and on the 4th Nov., 1626, Charles I. made him Earl Rivers, with like remainders to Sir Thomas Savage. He died in London on the 21st of Feb., 1639. and was buried at St. Osyth. By his will, dated 14th March, 1639, this Darcy, Lord Rivers, devised all his real and personal estate to his daughter Elizabeth, described as Elizabeth Viscountess Savage, and appointed her sole executrix. ______________________________

Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigationJump to search Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers (c.1565 – 25 February 1640) was an English peer and courtier.

He was the son of John Darcy, 2nd Baron Darcy of Chiche and Frances Rich. His grandfather was Thomas Darcy, 1st Baron Darcy of Chiche, a supporter of Lady Jane Grey. He succeeded to his father's title as 3rd Baron Darcy of Chiche in March 1581. In 1613, he obtained a new grant of the Barony of Darcy of Chiche with a special remainder, on the failure of his male issue, to his son-in-law, Sir Thomas Savage, and his heirs. He attended the courts of Elizabeth I and James I, and was created Viscount Colchester in the Peerage of England on 5 July 1621.[1] During the reign of Charles I, Darcy was further honoured when he was made Earl Rivers on 4 November 1626.[1] Both of these titles were created with the special remainder to Sir Thomas Savage and his heirs.[2]

Earl Rivers married Mary Kitson, a granddaughter of Sir Thomas Kitson. Together they had six children:[3]

Thomas Darcy, died without issue during his father's lifetime Elizabeth Savage, Countess Rivers (1581–1650), married Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage and had issue, including John Savage, 2nd Earl Rivers Lady Mary Darcy, married Roger Manwood, without issue Lady Penelope Darcy (d. 1661), a noted recusant, married first Sir George Trenchard, second Sir John Gage, 1st Baronet in 1611, by whom she had issue, and third Sir William Hervey in 1642 Lady Susan Darcy, died unmarried Edward Darcy (b. 1592 - d. 21 Feb 1639) He died on 25 February 1640 at Winchester House, near Broad Street, London and was succeeded in his titles, except for the original barony of Darcy of Chiche of 1581, by his grandson, John Savage, 2nd Earl Rivers.[4]
