GEDCOM Note

[wcase.sr.FTW]

From the notes of Edna Hash Green. Thomas married Ruth Sturgeon and had a large family, all born in Virginia, where they lived in Wythe County. In 1798, they emigrated to Kentucky. It must have taken a lot of courage to make such a long journey into almost unsettled country. They traveled the "Wilderness Road", which went through the Cumberland Gap into Tennessee to reach Kentucky. The road was once an old Indian trail-rough and rugged. In 1797 it had been widened enough for a wagon to travel. It probably took weeks of preparation for the trek, as all household furnishings, provisions, and livestock were taken. Several families traveled together-usually with brothers or kin. As Indians were still a real threat, there was safety in numbers. When Thomas reached Kentucky, he bought a farm in Green Countywhere they lived for 18 years.

The Hashs and Nances traveled together from Virginia to Kentucky and then to Illinois. Thomas and Robert Nance, Zachariah II's son, went on to Lawrence county, Missouri.
