Newspaper from Harvey, Illinois After 1925 DEATH OF THOMAS D. HOBSON The death of Thomas D. Hobson, one of Harvey's pioneers and one of the city's most highly respected citizens, which occurred at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago early Sunday morning, came as a great shock to the entire community. Mr. Hobson went to the Chicago hospital on Thursday of last week to prepare for an operation which was performed on Friday. He rallied after the operation and it was thought that he was on the way to recovery but late Saturday he was taken suddenly worse and died about two o'clock Sunday morning. The people of Harvey had come to know Mr. Hobson as a man of the highest character, kindly and generous. They had learned to respect him as one of the pioneers and builders of the comnunity and had learned to love hin as a true friend. M,r. Hobson was born at Port Whitby, Canada orl May 7, 1857. He spent his boyhood in Canada and in early manhood came to Rochester, NY to learn the building trade. He was accompanied by his brother who was kilted in a fall from a building which was under construction there. Mr. Hobson returned to Canada and a few years later came to Chicago where he engaged in building. He then went to Huron, South Dakota, where he also followed the calling of the builder. It was in the spring of 1891 that he first came to Harvey and since that day he had been closely identified with the growth of the community. He was then a building contractor, and it is understood that one of his first jobs was the business block at the north-east corner of Broadway and 154th street. There are very few of the larger buildings in the main part of the city of Harvey with the building of which Mr. Hobson did not have some connection. Notable among these are the city hall, the Elks

Death of Thornas D. Hobson - 2 home, the two bank buildings and most of the important blocks along l54th and adjacent streets. The Hobson firm constructed all but the first unit of the township high school building and at one time nearly rebuilt that original section. And in the meantime he was active in building operations through-out this section of the state. He supervised the construction of schools and other public buildings in various communities. During the past few years he had constructed a number of important Public Serviee conpany buildings in this part of lllinois. Mr. Hobson at one time served as city engineer of Harvey. He also served one term as a member of the Thornton Township high school board of education. He was a charter member of the local Masonic lodge and was also a member of the chapter, the counciI, the Order of Eastern Star and the White Shrine. He was also a charter member of the local EIks lodge and was one of six life members of the local lodge at the time of his death. He was affiliated with the Odd Fellows organizations of Harvey and was a member of the N.A.U. in this city. Following his death Mr. Hobson's body was brought to the Hobson home at 121 East 155th street where on Tuesday afternoon at two o' clock a short service was held. The body was taken to the Federated Church where the auditoriun was packed with those who wished to pay their last respects to his memory. Rev. W. F. Vance had charge of the service at the church. Because of inclement weather the Masonic service which was to have been held at the grave was also held in the church building. The Iocal Masonic lodge members attended in a body. The front of the church was banked with floral tributes, eloquent testinony of the high esteem in which Mr. Hobson was held in the community.
