About Thomas J. Burney
"Thomas Jefferson Burney was the second son of John and Elizabeth. Born in Greene County in 1801, T.J. Burney was educated in private schools in Madison and Monticello, GA. At the age of 17, he ventured into Alabama and worked for the U.S. Land Office in Cahaba. He later moved to Mobile and entered the land brokerage business. At the insistence of his older brother, John Walker Burney, TJ entered the law school of Judge Henry St. George Tucker in Winchester, VA. and later went into law practice with his brother in Monticello. In 1829, TJ married a distant cousin, Cornelia Walker, returned to Madison and entered the merchantile business. There he continued the practice of law, served as the mayor of Madison, was elected to a judgeship, and served a lengthy period as Trustee and Treasurer of Mercer University. His wife Cornelia died in 1836, leaving him with two young sons. In 1837, he married the daughter of Samuel Shields, Julia Ann, a recent widow with no surviving children."
