Kenedy, son of Colonel Mifflin Kenedy, the millionaire cattle king, was waylaid near the ferry landing on this side of the river by Deputy Sheriff Jose Marin Esparza, a ranchero of good family, and shot just below the heart and almost instantly killed. … The Cause of the sad affair was, as usual in a homicide in this part of the world, a woman. Dona Ellvira Lima de Esparza is a very handsome woman, of rather gay habits and married to the shooter. She, however, could not stand a quiet ranch life with her husband, and some time ago left him and came to town to her mother. Her first escapade, some months ago, was to run away with Manny Kepple, a well known gambler. Since then there have been many rumors as to her conduct. … Last night there was an open air ball with electric light, fireworks, etc., at Santa Cruz, on the Mexican side of the river. Mr. Kenedy took Dona Ellvira to the ball. Here she saw her husband as she walked on the arm of her escort and smiled and saluted him, and after, when the pair were seated near Esparza eating ice cream, an insulting remark was made about him. This enraged Esparza and he drew his weapon on the ball floor, but two of his companions seized him and led him away. He then crossed the ferry and hid behind a large willow tree beside the plank walk leading up to the town. … Kenedy, it appears, feared trouble, and gave a pistol to Gabriel O’Shaughnessy and told him to protect him from any attack from behind. … As Kenedy and Dona Ellvira approached the lurking place of Esparza the latter stepped from behind the tree and fired on Kenedy, who fell into the ditch on the far side of the walk. He then fired twice at the woman, who ran shrieking into town. … O’Shaughnessy, who was in the lead, then fired four shots at Esparza, who, bare-headed, ran up the river and made his escape, and so far has avoided arrest. … Mr. Kenedy was taken to the custom house station, and in about three quarters of an hour he died. He was conscious and fully identified his assailant. … It was not thought that Mr. Kenedy was armed. If he was he had no chance to use his weapon. He was just 35 years old, the day of his death being his birthday. He was a widower, his wife, Miss Yznaga, a cousin of Lady Mandeville of England, having died a few months ago.
