About Thomas Seilles Kennedy
Dr. Thomas Seilles Kennedy, a physician of the old school, and one of the best known practitioners in New Orleans, died Saturday at his late residence, 1436 Josephine street, succumbing to a three weeks' attack of la grippe......
The death of Dr. Kennedy marks the passing of one of the best known specialists in the diseases of children, noted medical lecturer, a devotee of Shakespeare, talented elocutionist and French scholar. He was a native of New Orleans, and served through the Civil war as a fighter for the Confederacy in the Pelican Battery. After the war he returned to New Orleans and completed his education in medicine. He looked upon the Civil war as an incident to be forgotten and pursued the remainder of his life without allying himself with any of the veteran organizations.
Dr. Kennedy was for fifteen years in charge of the children's clinic of the Charity Hospital, and lectured there twice a week on the diseases of children. He was a member of the Tulane board of administrators for many years and took a deep interest in the upbuilding of the university. His hobby was Shakespeare, of whom he was a deep student, and practically all of whose writings he had memorized.
Shortly after beginning the practice of medicine Dr. Kennedy married Miss Ruby Mallory, daughter of the Confederate secretary of the navy in President Davis' cabinet. She preceded him to the grave a number of years ago. He is survived by a son, Dr. Mallory Kennedy of Pensacola, who is now in France with the British forces, and who married Miss Sadie Logan of Salem, Va.; a grandson, Thomas Sellies Kennedy; tow sisters, Mrs. S. S. Prentiss and Mrs. H. W. Flower of New Orleans, and a brother, Paul R. Kennedy of Morristown, N. J.
