About Thomas Livezey

Source: The Livezey Family, by Charles Harper Smith (1934).

Thomas became an early convert to Quakerism, and was one of the first persons in Cheshire to suffer persecution for his belief. In 1653 for refusing to take oath, he "had a Cow taken from him worth 50 shillings and for the same Cause suffer'd six Weeks and five Days Imprisonment." (Sufferings of the People called Quakers by Joseph Besse, London, 1733)

  • He was a husbandman or tenant farmer, as his father had been before him
  • 1682, March 2nd-3rd: Purchased from Penn's land agents in England: a tract of 250 acres, to be laid out and surveyed for him in the Province of Pennsylvania. The price paid for the land was 5 pounds / 5 sh., or about ten cents an acre. • Exact arrival date assumed to be between March 3, 1682 and January 11th, 1683. It is possible that he came indirectly to Philadelphia. Relatives Jonathan and Gilbert Livesey were, at that time, masters of vessels making runs between Liverpool and Virginia. •The Livesey Family history notes (p. 15) "many of the early arrivals lived in caves dug into the steep bank of the Delaware" (!) •Land purchased in England had to be 'warranted' that is, purchased from the Indians in addition. Thomas Livesey had to wait for this. Livesey obtained his warrant on February 20, 1684. The tract lay in "Pemapecka", later called Dublin TOwnship, several miles north-east of the city.

  • Thomas acquired an additional adjoining 250 acres for son Jonathan who was approaching manhood. This brought the total land holding to 500 acres
  • Thomas and Jonathan identified themselves with the Tookany (Tacony) Meeting. The name of the meeting was changed to "Oxford" by April 1685. The site is at the intersection of Waln and Unity Streets, Frankford, and is occupied by a later meeting house, built in 1776. (This meeting house is visible on google maps)
