W.G. Davis 1927, The Ancestry of Lieut. Amos Towne 1737-1793 of
Arundel (Kennebunkport), Maine, pp 71-72. Involved in mining at Lynn and later Rowley Village (Boxford). Probably came from England as employee of John Bes & Company to establish the Iron Works at Hammersmith in Lynn, 1643. Was a collier (preparator of charcoal used in smelting). Moved to Rowley Village in 1673, but the plant there was destroyed by fire.
