Member of the Moodie Trek, with his parents and siblings; on the establishment of Melsetter, in the Chipinga district of Gazaland (Rhodesia) Tom became the postmaster. His father Groot Tom became the sheriff, and Dunbar Moodie took it upon himself to see that order was observed and to register the farms (p. 52 of Many Treks made Rhodesia).
Following the death of his father Groot Tom, this Tom returned to the Transvaal with his widowed mother where he married his brother-in-law's sister Susanna Maria Erasmus.
