Biography

Thomas Moulton, Twin of Mary was born on July 13, 1608 in Ormsby St. Margaret, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom and was baptized on July 16, 1608 in Ormesby, , Norfolk, , ENGLAND,. His parents were Robert Moulton and Mary Moulton. He went To Newbury 1637 to Hampton NH with bro 1639 York 1665.

Martha, also noted as Mary,[1], and Thomas Moulton were married in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts during either 1638[2] or 1639[3]. Their firstborn is said to have arrived in 1639. Thomas' name is on the list of First Settlers in Newbury along with John and William Moulton. [4]

Together they had the following children:

Thomas Moulton migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Thomas Moulton, son of Robert Moulton and Mary (Smith) Moulton, was baptized at Ormesby 16 June 1608.[1] He had a twin sister Mary as well as other siblings.[2]

Thomas Moulton came from Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk, England in 1637 to Newbury.[3] [4] [5] He is listed among the first settlers of Newbury.[6]. along with John and William Moulton. He was a Freeman in 31 MAR 1638. He was with the the first settlers to Hampton, where he was granted 80 acres in December 1639 and lived near the home of his supposed elder brother John MOULTON. Called "of Hampton" in deeds 12 MAY 1656 when he sold his house there, but owned property in York by July 1654. Bought 70 acres with a small building adjacent to Arthur BRAGDON in March 1655. He was of York when he sold this to Alexander MAXWELL 23 JAN 1657 and lived on Gorges Neck until his death.

He was constable in 1661; grand jury 1666-67; trial jury 1668; he signed the petition in favor of Peter Weare in 1668; selectman 1679,1680.

In 1684 he and his wife Martha deeded their whole estate to their sons Jeremiah and Joseph for support for life. He was dead in 1703, she in 1711, Jeremiah having cared for her.[7][8][9][10][11][12] [13]

  6. Joseph, York. O. A. 22 Mar. 1679-80; grant 1685; constable 1686, 1688; gr.j. 1686, 1691; j. 1691. In 1691 he entert. the gr.j. at his tav. and with James Sayward was bondsm. for Daniel Manning. List 33. In the Ind. attack 25 Jan. 1691-2, he and one or more sons were taken; his w. (probate records indicate she was dau. of Francis Littlefield 16) is not ment. as a captive or as alive later, and prob. was then k. He d. in captivity; his inv., ‘who was taken by the Inds.,’ 12 Oct. 1692. Francis Littlefield, sr., was admr. 12 Dec. 1692 to 1695+; Jan. 3, 1699-1700 adm. was gr. to the br. Jeremiah, who demanded (but did not get) the est. from John Heard (he had wintered cows for Joseph bef. his captiv.); in Oct. 1718 Mr. Jeremiah M. (poss. the son) asked for an addi. invent. Four sons, all of York and three of age in 1706 (Y. D. 7: 51, 216). They were born between 1682 and 1688.

Origins

Robert Moulton & Mary Smith, had ten children, all born in Scratby, England: Samuel (1596), John (about 1599), Bridget (1601), James l(1603), Henry (about 1604), Thomas (1608), Mary (1608), Elizabeth (1610), Miriam (about 1614) and Ruth (about 1617). These were all mentioned in his will except Bridget who apparently had died before her father and Samuel who had been sent to Cambridge University and ordained as a deacon.

  • THOMAS MOULTON, with wife Martha, were in Newbury in 1637 and removed to Hampton, N. H. the same year. Probably followed Wheelwright when he was banished. Children:
    • 1. Thomas, born 1638.
    • 2. Daniel, born 1641.
  • Most of the New Hampshire and Maine Moultons are supposed to have descended from this Thomas.
  • His descendant. General Moulton, bought a large tract of land at the head of Lake Winnipissogee and settled Moultonboro (Wm. S. Moulton.) It is supposed that Jeremiah Moulton, of York, Maine, was one of his younger sons. Jeremiah was born in 1650, was represenative to General Court in 1692 and was afterwards one of the Governing Council. He died in 1727, aged 77.
