Departed Liverpool, 13 February 1820. Arrived Simon's Bay, Cape Town - 1st May 1820. Final Port - Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth 15 May 1820.

Area Allocated to the Party : Torrens River - named Clumber after Clumber Park, the seat of the Duke of Newcastle, Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Committee.

He was an 1820 Settler (Calton's Party-13 February 1820)

Source - 1820 Settlers.com Calton's Party was named after it's leader Thomas Calton, a surgeon of North Collingham, Nottinghamshire. They departed on the 13th February 1820, from Liverpool on the sailing vessel the Albury, arriving in Simon's Bay on the 1st May and Algoa Bay on the 15th May. Dr Calton died unexpectedly on the 8th July while the party was encamped at Algoa Bay awaiting transport to it's location. Thomas Draper succeeded him as leader of the party. The party was located on the Torrens River, and the location was named Clumber after the seat of the Duke of Newcastle. Thomas Nelson was accompanied by his wife Mary and their children at the time, William aged 3 and Matilda aged 1. Source - The settlers handbook by MD Nash. Additional Info: As Nottingham/Nottinghamshire was one of the areas worst hit by the Industrial Revolution most if not all of these settlers were frameknit workers so had little chance of becoming successful farmers.
