About Thomas Palmer of Shirley Hundred Island

Biography

http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch From Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol IV p. 66:

Thomas Palmer came to Virginia from England in the ship "Tiger" in 1621 with his wife Joane and daughter Priscilla, age 11. On February 16, 1623, these three are given as residing in Virginia at "Jordan's Journey," which is probably just below City Point. [They are listed in the Muster of 1624/5 on January 21, 1624 as residing at Jordan's Jorney and Chaplain Choice, arriving on the ship Tyger November 1621.] This Thomas was a member of the House of Burgesses of the Colony which assembled at Jamestown Oct. 16, 1629, and he represented Shirley Hundred Main. He was also a member again on Mar. 24 1629/30 from Shirley Hundred Main. He commanded a company of Shirley Hundred men and was called Captain. He was a Justice appointed in Mar. 1631./2 for the monthly courts for the upper parts of the counties of Charles City and Henrico. Jane and Priscilla appear in Charles City County in 1637 as head rights under John Baker as patentee. Whether Thomas had died by 1637 we do not know, nor do we know whether he had any other children. He could have had others, but none appear of record.

Thomas Palmer was one of a number of Virginia Planters listed on a petition dated the 15 July 1631 held by the National Archives, Kew (London). It was the 'Petition from planters of Virginia requesting bills of store without custom and impost for the tobacco which they had in England'. Only a few of the men have 'Mr.' in front of their names like 'Mr. Thomas Palmer', indicating higher than average social status.

Disputed death: He died about 1633,[3] before 1637;[2] 29 December 1629 in England.[1][5] He wrote a will on 9 Dec 1629, which was probated after his death in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.[6]

Disputed children

The only known child of Thomas Palmer of Shirley Hundred Island & Joane Palmer looks to be Priscilla Baker.

http://www.southern-style.com/PALMER.htm Lists these additional children:

I am interested in the children of Thomas Palmer #17, namely John, under Generation 16. So far what I've seen regarding their children are references to Priscilla, daughter of Thomas and Joane, who arrived with her parents in 1621..and I see references to the land grants to John and Thomas (son) and indications that they might be Thomas' (1590-1629) sons. But, I have seen a listing for Thomas Palmer in Virginia Immigrants and Adventures, 1607-1635: A Bibliographical Dictionary that indicates he left a will and mentions sons but there is no mention of their names but it does mention the names of the daughters...Joan, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Mary. It does say he left a "gold ring and some tobacco to his eldest son" and "some tobacco to his second and third sons and his daughters"...(named). …”. Research needed.

Evidence needed to support these profiles as parents of Edward Palmer; Thomas Palmer; Martin Palmer of King William County; Mary Palmer; or Samuel Palmer.

  • an JSTOR that refers to 'Thomas Palmer who came over from England in the ship 'Tiger' ['Tyger'] in 1621 with his wife Joane and daughter Priscilla, aged 11 years.' (This was published by the Omunundro Institute for Early American History and Culture.) So Priscilla would have been born 1619/20, depending on the month of her birth.
