About Joane Palmer

Joan (seen as) Jordan born 1593 in England and died after 1637 in Northumberland, Virginia.

Disputed Origins

Parents seen as Samuel Jordan, of Jordan's Journey and France [first wife]. [n.b. this parentage needs to be checked and verified.]. Evidence seems weak for parentage, but possibly related, as she lived at Jordan’s Journey. Disconnected.

Family

Married:

  1. 1613 in Virginia to Thomas Palmer (1590-1633), NOT the son of John Palmer (1544-1637) and Elizabeth Verney (1558-?). *** this is not correct they were not married in Virginia but in England, Thomas Palmer did not arrive in Colonial Virginia until November 1621, when he arrived in Jamestown aboard the ship Tyger accompanied by his wife Joane and 6 year old daughter Priscilla.

2) HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, Vol. I by Boddie, page 294. "John Baker received a grant of land in Charles City County...50 acres due in right of his first wife, "Pericilla" Palmer and 50 acres by deed of gift from his mother-in-law, Jone Palmer - 02 June 1633. "John Baker married the second time to Alice ? and a third time to Dorothy Harris.

Disputed children

The only known child of Thomas Palmer of Shirley Hundred Island & Joane Palmer looks to be Priscilla Baker.

http://www.southern-style.com/PALMER.htm Lists these additional children:

I am interested in the children of Thomas Palmer #17, namely John, under Generation 16. So far what I've seen regarding their children are references to Priscilla, daughter of Thomas and Joane, who arrived with her parents in 1621..and I see references to the land grants to John and Thomas (son) and indications that they might be Thomas' (1590-1629) sons. But, I have seen a listing for Thomas Palmer in Virginia Immigrants and Adventures, 1607-1635: A Bibliographical Dictionary that indicates he left a will and mentions sons but there is no mention of their names but it does mention the names of the daughters...Joan, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Mary. It does say he left a "gold ring and some tobacco to his eldest son" and "some tobacco to his second and third sons and his daughters"...(named). …”. Research needed.

Evidence needed to support these profiles as parents of Edward Palmer; Thomas Palmer; Martin Palmer of King William County; Mary Palmer; or Samuel Palmer.

Thomas Palmer came to Virginia from England in the ship "Tiger" in 1621 with his wife Joane and daughter Priscilla, age 11. On February 16, 1623, these three are given as residing in Virginia at "Jordan's Journey," which is probably just below City Point. [They are listed in the Muster of 1624/5 on January 21, 1624 as residing at Jordan's Jorney and Chaplain Choice, arriving on the ship Tyger November 1621.] This Thomas was a member of the House of Burgesses of the Colony which assembled at Jamestown Oct. 16, 1629, and he represented Shirley Hundred Main. He was also a member again on Mar. 24 1629/30 from Shirley Hundred Main. He commanded a company of Shirley Hundred men and was called Captain. He was a Justice appointed in Mar. 1631./2 for the monthly courts for the upper parts of the counties of Charles City and Henrico. Jane and Priscilla appear in Charles City County in 1637 as head rights under John Baker as patentee. Whether Thomas had died by 1637 we do not know, nor do we know whether he had any other children. He could have had others, but none appear of record.

7. Thomas Palmer Died 1633. Only wife Joane & daughter Priscilla are mentioned--Joane listed as head rights under John Baker as patentee.

Born in England on 1586. Joan married Thomas Palmer and had 5 children. She passed away on 1621 in Virginia, USA. THIS DEATH DATE IS NOT CORRECT! SHE DID NOT DIE IN 1621. She arrived in Jamestown in November 1621 aboard the ship Tyger with her husband Thomas Palmer and daughter Priscilla and was enumerated at Jordan's Journey in both the 1623/24 muster and 1624/25 muster. So she was still alive well past 1621.

  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Palmer_(burgess) Thomas Palmer was an English settler of colonial Virginia, arriving with his wife, Joan, eleven-year-old daughter Priscilla and servant Richard English on the Tyger in November 1621. The Palmers are listed as living at Jordan's Journey, which almost certainly saved their lives during the Indian Massacre of 1622. (Joan Palmer may have been a relation of Samuel Jordan.). Palmer was one of the House of Burgesses at Jamestown on 16 October 16 1629, representing Shirley Hundred Island.

She passed away about 1633.[2]. Cecily, born 1600, could not have been mother. 1593 is earlier than the 1595 date reported for Samuel's previous marriage.”
