About Thomas Patch, of Salem & Beverly

Not the same as Thomas Patch, of Wenham

Biography

Thomas Patch was born, perhaps Mackerel Cove, then Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, about 1638,[3] died in Beverly, 28 September 1711,[4][5] the son of Nicholas Patch and his wife, Elizabeth Owsley.[6]

Origins

Nicholas Patch Jr. and Elizabeth Owley arrived in the Massachusetts colony on the “DEFENDER” in 1636, with two sons, John and James. They settled in Salem in 1637. Nicholas was a member of First Church, Salem. Nicholas was prominent in church and town affairs and is reputed to be one of the founders of Beverly, MA. Nicholas Patch Jr. had a grant of land of 10 acres in 1638 and 40 acres in 1639. Nicholas gave land on which the first church in Beverly was established and may have endowed the church to some extent. The church was established in 1667.

Thomas' father, Nicholas Patch, and Mary's father, John Lovett, were both received as inhabitants of Salem at the same town meeting, 25 July 1639. At that time, both were granted land "neere Macrell Cove."[8] Nicholas Patch "lived at Mackerel Cove, in the Beverly part of Salem."[9][10]

Nicholas Patch[11] and his sons, John Patch[12] and Thomas Patch, all lived on the Bass River side of Salem in 1667-1668 when the church there was formed[13] and the area then set off to become Beverly.

He married, probably Mackerel Cove, then Salem (now Beverly), say about 1667 (baptism of two children, July 1668),

Mary Lovett was born. probably Mackerel Cove, then Salem (now Beverly), Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, say about 1645 (assums she was 21 or 22 at the date of marriage), the daughter of John Lovett and Mary _____. Together with her brothers Simon and Joseph, Mary was baptized at Salem, 8 : 7 : 1650 [8 September 1650].[1] She died, probably Beverly, before 28 March 1707.[2]

Thomas and Mary (Lovett) Patch were the parents of at least three children:

  1. Thomas Patch (Jr.), baptized Beverly, 19 July 1668.[12] Died Beverly, 16 Mar 1747. Was his widow Eliza?
  2. William Patch, baptized Beverly, 19 July 1668.[13]. Died Beverly, 1 Nov 1742. Married Eleanor (unknown).
  3. James Patch, baptized Beverly, 31 March 1678.[14]. Died Beverly, 1 Apr 1757. Married Rebekah "Rebecca" Biles.

Thomas and Mary (Lovett) Patch became members of the new Beverly church shortly after its formation.

Notes

Thomas Patch most likely married two women named Mary--(1) to Mary Scott by 1666 (first child, Sarah, is said baptized 08 December 1666, Wenham) and (2) to Mary Lovett.

No, they were two different Thomas Patches. Thomas Patch (d. 1721 at Wenham) married Mary Scott. Thomas Patch (d. 1711 at Beverly) married Mary Lovett.

Stearns, Ezra S. Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire (Lewis Publishing Company, 1908) Vol. 2, Page 621 "was born in Salem Massachusetts in 1640. Savage mentions him as Thomas of Wenham and the year of his birth about 1638. He was made freeman in 1670 and representative in 1679. His wife was Mary A. Lovett (Savage says Scott) of Ipswich Massachusetts, daughter of Thomas Lovett, and among their children were Thomas, James, Stephen, Isaac, Ephraim, Timothy, Simeon, Sarah, and Marah(Mariah)."

Research notes

“Essex County contemporaries, both Thomas Patch”

Work toward a Genealogical Proof

There are two Essex County contemporaries, both Thomas Patch--one of Salem and Beverly, and one of Ipswich and Wenham. Both were born about the same time and married women named Mary, about the same time.

While the two Thomas' are frequently confused in print, only one of them can be the son by that name mentioned in the probate record of Nicholas1 Patch. See John and Thomas Patch agreement regarding estate of Nicholas Patch.

The historical notes and records that follow support a simple argument that Nicholas' son was Thomas Patch (c1638-1711) of Salem and Beverly in 1668, 1670, 1671, 1673, 1677, 1678, 1686 and 1707, who died there 1711. Thomas2 Patch married Mary Lovett, the daughter of John1 and Mary Lovett of the same.

Nicholas Patch's 1639 Salem land grant ("40 acres of land to him neere Macrell Coue") was on the Bass River side of Salem. Nicholas and sons John and Thomas, were all of that area in 1667-1668 when the church was formed and the area set off to become Beverly. It was but a few years later that Nicholas died, surely in Beverly, before 16 November 1673.

Thomas2 and Mary (Lovett) Patch had three children baptized Beverly--William (1668), Thomas (1668) and James (1678). These are the same three children who in 1707 deeded or were deeded property Mary (Lovett) Patch inherited from her father, John Lovett.

Conversely, the other contemporary, Thomas Patch (1638-1721) of Ipswich and Wenham, had children born in Wenham as early as 1666 and 1669. He is said to have built a large home there about 1700. He married, probably Ipswich, Mary Scott of Ispwich. No attempt has been made to place Thomas Patch of Ipswich and Wenham in a larger Patch descendancy. (There are likewise no known serious attempts to place James^1 Patch--he too was once thought to have been Nicholas' son.)
