Notes for Thomas Pitt

Thomas Pitt was a merchant of Bristol and Chamberlain of the city. His will was written 1 May 1613, and probated 5 August 1613. In it he mentions leaving such possessions as inns he built and leased out, three silver gilt ale cups, rings of gold, and quite a few pounds (British money). Thomas had, from mention in his will, four children: Alice, who married a Northen, and later, a Mr. Knight; Anne, who married a Waters, and then John Merrick; Mary, who married Robert Owen, and later, Richard Davis; and son and executor, William Pitt. His son William was named executor and was given a lease for life of a tenement outside the Temple Gate in the City of Bristol. The said tenement was in the possession of George Tyce who had an inn called the Saracen&raqip's Head. William also inherited another tenement outside the Temple Gate that was occupied by Thomas Arther, esq. When William's son, Robert teached the age of 22 years, he was to be paid ten pounds yearly by Thomas Arther. At William's death, his son Robert was to inherit the two tenements. William was also to give his two sons, Robert and William, ten pounds each when they reached sixteen years of age.

Thomas evidently had no living wife at the time of his death, but it seemed that he had buried two. He spoke in his will of his children and his daughters in law (meaning, at that time period, his stepdaughters).
