About Thomas Roberts, of Marblehead
Disambiguation
Please don't conflate Robert Roberts, of Ipswich with Thomas Roberts, of Marblehead
Biography
Thomas Roberts of Marblehead who is almost certainly the same as Thomas Robert of Boston who arrived by 1637 as servant mentioned in the Winthrop Papers page 3:445. He married first to Eunice. She married second to Moese Maverick of Marblehead. Authors have conflated the spouses and children of Robert Roberts with those of Thomas Roberts of Ipswich. For example Savage's work on the Roberts family should be totally ignored. Savage has Robert married to Eunice. This is in error as the records of the First Church of Boston show clearly that Eunice was the wife of Thomas Roberts. Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 (p. 628) also has Thomas Roberts married to Eunice Cole. Essex Institute Historical Collections 269 shows that Elizabeth (Roberts) Turner wife of John Turner and later Charles Redford of Salem was in fact daughter of Thomas Roberts of Boston/Marblehead bp 11:4:1648 in Boston. See Founders of Marblehead for more about this family group. Elizabeth appears to be his only proven child.
Regarding his wife see also History of Salem p 236
Note Thomas Roberts death location has not been found. He likely died in Boston or Mablehead. We just known he died by the time his widow Eunice married to Moses Maverick of Marblehead so about 1656. He did not die on July 19, 1663 in Ipswich. That was Robert Roberts of Ipswich who died on that date. Thomas Roberts' widow Eunice had long been remarried to Moses Maverick by 1663.
