About Thomas "The Husbandman" Lincoln
Thomas Lincoln, The Husbandman, son of Joan, brother of Stephen
Eight families by the name of Lincoln came from Hingham, Norfolk, England, and vicinity to Hingham, Massachusetts, between 1630 and 1643/4. There were four Thomases, two Daniels, a Samuel, and a Stephen. The four Lincolns named Thomas can be distinguished by their occupations: a miller, a husbandman (a farmer), a cooper, and a weaver. It is assumed that our Thomas was the husbandman who came to America with his brother, Stephen, who had the same occupation, in the ship Diligent arriving 10 August 1638. They came with their mother, Joan Lincoln. The name of their father is unknown.
She was the mother of Stephen and Thomas Lincoln. The name of her husband is not known, nor is her maiden name. She died after Oct. 1658 for she is mentioned in her son Stephen's will.
He was the son of Mrs. Joan Lincoln and brother of Stephen Lincoln who were also on the Diligent. Thomas died 16 Aug 1692 in Hingham. He married Margaret Langer, dau. of Richard Langer, although the date and place of their marriage is not recorded in the George Lincoln book. Margaret died on 5 Mar 1693/94 in Hingham. In early Hingham there were four Thomas Lincolns and each is distinguished by his occupation.
Thomas Lincoln's name occurs frequently in the early records of the town of Hingham. He was selectman in 1662, 1669, and 1672. His will, dated 24 May 1681, bequeathed to his wife, Margaret; to daughters, Susanna Barstow, Mary Barker, Sarah Marsh, Elizabeth Lincoln, and Ruth Gill; and to sons, Joshua, Caleb, and Thomas
Thomas, styled "the husbandman," and brother of Stephen Lincoln, came from Wymondham in the County of Norfolk, Eng., and settled in Hingham in the autumn of 1638. His name frequently occurs upon the early records of the town, and in every instance he is distinguished from the other Thomases by his occupation. His conveyances and titles to property acquired either by grant or purchase, also afford evidence of his vocation in life. None of his descendants bearing the surname in the male line reside in Hingham at the present time. They are, however, quite numerous throughout New England, and not difficult to connect with those who removed into Worcester County, and to the State of Maine. His wife was Margaret, daughter of Richard Langer. She outlived him, and died in Hingham 5 March, 1693-94. He died 16 Aug. 1692. In his will, made 24 May, 1681, names wife and eight children. "Farmer." Selectman 1662, 1669, and 1672. Resided on Fort Hill St., "on the upland by the highway side going to Weymouth mill."

Thomas LINCOLN was a husbandman and his descendants are often referred to as the husbandman LINCOLNs (I use LINCOLN=H in my internal database to differentiate them from LINCOLN=W for Samuel LINCOLN the weaver, LINCOLN=C for Thomas LINCOLN the cooper, and Stephen Jr. LINCOLN=R the carpenter.)
