About Thomas Tugwell
The paintings of his parents and brother William are by Thomas Gainsborough. (Gainsborough moved to Bath in 1759 where fashionable society patronised him.) The painting of Thomas appears to show him in his twenties..and therefore could have been painted between 1764 and 1769 when he died aged 25.
All three paintings by Gainsborough can still be seen as Sandford Orcas near Sherbourne, where the owner Sir Mervyn Meddllycott is a descendant of the marriage of their daughter Betty to Sir William Coles Meddlycott of Venn House in 1796.
His death 1769 is recorded on the memorial to his parents in Holy Trinity Church in Bradford-on-Avon.
