1765 "Marriage of Betty Hayward and William Tugwell:

(Note by Michael Poole: her family is allocated to brother Thomas in a family paper - but some children were too young).

Children of Betty Hayward and William Tugwell were:

1. +George Hayward Tugwell, b. 1767, d. 14 Jan 1839, Crowe Hall, Bath.

2. +Thomas Tugwell, b. 1769, d. 18 Apr 1833, Woolley, Bradford.

3. Daniel Tugwell, b. 1770, d. end Dec 1774, just after his father died .

4. +Elizabeth Tugwell, b. 1772, d. 31 Jul 1847.

5. +Mawby Tugwell, b. 1773, d. 15 May 1815."

We are fortunate that in the year of their marriage (1765) the Tugwell`s were painted by Thomas Gainsborough in Bath. Gainsborough also painted William Tugwell's parents and brother Thomas. (These can still be seen as Sandford Orcas near Sherbourne, where the owner Sir Mervyn Meddllycott is a descendant of the marriage of their daughter Betty to Sir William Coles Meddlycott of Venn House in 1796.)

They live in Freshford House (Manor), for the Land Tax for the year of 1766 shows William Tugwell paying £2 1s 4d Tax, (a relative) Paul Methuen £25 13s 0d , George Dike £7 19s 2d and George Cooper 5s 4d.

A later Tax for his land in Limpley Stoke for the year 1766 show him paying £1 4s 4d for Combe Bottom, whilst George Dike pays £20 16s 10d out of a total of £26 for the village.

Death 1774, 25 December

Sadly William dies at the age of just 32 on Christmas Day in 1774 and Betty (see Betty's personal history) was left with 5 children to bring up.

His death is recorded on the memorial to his parents in Holy Trinity Church in Bradford-on-Avon.

Death of son Daniel c. end December 1774

There is an entry in the church records for his burial and that of his son Daniel shortly afterwards.

Father Humphry Tugwell dies shortly after William in early 1775

WILL of Tugwell, Humphry Codicil: 6 Apr 1775 - says William has died leaving issue:

  • George Haywood,
  • Thomas,
  • Elizabeth, [and]
  • Mawby.
