Thomas Carr Waller was a church warden of St. George’s Parish in 1748, when the vestry purchased land for a new church. He lived and died on the Cedar Point farm.
Thomas, as the eldest son, inherited John and Agnes’ Waller’s home farm, Topping Castle, after the death of his mother in 1777. He was listed in the Spotsylvania County tax lists with 470 acres, 15-19 slaves, and 5-6 horses from 1786 (the earliest surviving record) to 1787, when he died, aged 55. Sarah was listed from 1790 to 1821 with the same land, 3-9 slaves, and 4-5 horses. In the 1810 census, she was living with one other female over 45 and 12 slaves. In the 1820 census, she was living alone with 18 slaves. After her death in 1822, the land was listed as Thomas Waller’s estate through 1824.

- Comment: “The 1942 membership application by Lewis G. Chewing for Sons of the American Revolution says " Thomas Waller of Spotsylvania Co. Va was a private in the 6th Continental Line and received a pension for his services." The Thomas Waller associated with the 6th appears to have died 1818 or 1819. Another record shows a Thomas Waller under Capt. J. P. Duval deserted. A Thomas Waller was a fifer but with a Maryland Regt. The line of descent as detailed by Mr. Chewing is fine but I am beginning to have serious concerns about the war participation. If anyone has examined DAR membership papers and can document the participation, please share.”
