About Thomas Waters, Sr.

Not a known son of Col. William Waters.

May be same person as Thomas Waters

Existence, though not parentage, supported by findagrave.com: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=104890968 - accuracy of the information unknown.

Had sufficiently high regard for Col. Philemon Lloyd of Wye House, MD, to name a son after him, but the exact reason for this is unknown. (His wife was not Col. Lloyd's daughter.)

He probably doesn't belong to the family tree of Lt. Edward Waters at all. Dating and placing him is very difficult. An additional complication is that a Y-DNA test on a male-line descendant of the *John* Waters line (descended from Lt. Edward's brother) had an "I" result - but this line belongs to haplogroup "R".

Possibilities include:

  • son of Margaret Clarke and her first husband, Dr. George Clarke; adopted by William Waters (undocumented)
  • son of .Margaret Clarke and her second husband, William Waters (undocumented and now unlikely)
  • Unrelated Waters, not previously documented, possibly adopted or fostered by William Waters. Claimed birthplace of Northumberland County, VA (mainland) points to this last, as the Edward Waters descendants tended to live on the Eastern Shore.

Wife may actually have been Margaret Reno, not Lloyd.

As originally established by the House of Burgesses from Northumberland County, Virginia in 1653, the territory of Westmoreland County encompassed much of what later became the various counties and cities of Northern Virginia, including the city of Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Prince William County. These remained Westmoreland until 1664, when Stafford County, Virginia was formed.

Thomas Waters [is claimed to have been] the son of William and Margaret Robins Waters.

Information from family trees is not necessarily accurate. There is NO primary evidence that Col. William Waters and Margaret widow Clarke (whose identity as Col. William's "stepsister" is also without primary evidence) had ANY children at all.

This is one of those Family Myths that simply will not die, although Y-DNA research recently gave it a severe goring. (Descendant(s) of Philemon Waters tested Y-haplogroup R; a descendant of John Waters of Anne Arundel - collateral to the Edward Waters line of the Eastern Shore - tested haplogroup I.)
