He graduated from Yale University in 1797 and as a young
pastor in 1799, he went to Canandaigua, New York to preach
to those who had settled on what was then a new frontier. He was one of three who organized the First Congregational Church there and he was ordained its first pastor in February 1800. He was dismissed at his own request on 12 June 1805. His home is still there at 79 Howell Street.
He later began a long career as the pastor of the Congregational Church in Westminster West, Vermont. He married Wealthy Bishop on January 3,1801. He died at the Brattleboro Retreat, which was one of the earliest
