Research Notes

The branch of the Knowlton family beginning with this Timothy was the focus of an October 2017-February 2018 research study based on the GHK Archives at the State Library of New York.[1] Several of Timothy and Hannah's children in Stocking either never existed or were conflated with other branches of the family. This entry has been updated to reflect the most recent research and Silas (191, fictional), Benjamin (193), Timothy (194) and Rosel (195) have all been disconnected.

Biography

Birth

About 1690 (Manchester, Essex, MA) to John Knowlton and Bethia (Edwards) Knowlton. [2] Baptized 1692 (Wenham, Essex Co., MA)[3] Marriage

30 Aug 1711 (Ipswich, MA) Hannah Storey.[2][4] 13 Aug 1760 (Johnston, Providence, RI) Martha Shippee. [5] Note: this may actually be a 3rd marriage, the second wife as yet unknown.) Military Service

1707 (Port Royal Expedition) Soldier; Queen Anne's War; Massachusetts Militia; Colonel Francis Wainwright's Regiment, Captain Mathew Perkins' Company. Timothy was released from duty early which could mean he was injured or sick.[6] Residence and Property

1 May 1712 (The Hamlet, Ipswich, Essex Co., MA). Signed a petition to create The Hamlet as a separate parish from Ipswich.[7] 13 Apr 1716 (The Hamlet, Ipswich, Essex Co., MA) Timothy sold his house and land to his brother-in-law Issac Giddings. He is said to be "of Ipswich, Yeoman" in the instrument but likely relocated to Sherborn, MA shortly thereafter.[8] 6 Nov 1721 (Sherborn, Middlesex, MA). Timothy appears on a list of taxpayers assessed minister's rates for the year.[9] 1725 (Douglas, Worcester, MA). Timothy, along with many others in Sherborn, received a grant of land. What was called "Sherborn New Grant" became the town of Douglas. There is no evidence that Timothy or any family members ever lived there.[10] 13 Mar 1727 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy is voted a surveyor of highways.[11] 4 Dec 1727 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted a committee member to examine the expenditures on a new meeting house.[12] 10 Mar 1728/29 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted a hog reeve. Since it was customary for newly married men to receive this appointment, it may indicate that Hannah was deceased and that Timothy had a recent, second marriage.[13] 20 Apr 1730 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted the appointment of sexton for one year at a salary of 10 shillings.[14] 27 Apr 1731 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted an additional sum of 10 shillings for taking care of the meeting house.[15] 12 Mar 1732/33 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted a surveyor of highways.[16] 14 Oct 1734 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) At a meeting of the town, Timothy was voted 4 pounds for taking care of hte meeting house and finishing the pound.[17] 4 Feb 1735/36 (Holliston, Middlesex, MA) A new highway was laid out by the town and the description reads: "beginning at the white oak tree by the house where Timothy Knowlton now lives..."[18] 19 Oct 1738 (New Hopkinton Plantation No. 5, Merrimack County, New Hampshire). In 1738, Timothy and his sons, Ephraim and Paul, left Holliston and were some of the first settlers in a new settlement in New Hampshire. At the first meeting of the proprietors, Timothy is appointed to a committee to review and lay out lots and highways.[19] 9 Nov 1748 (New Hopkinton Plantation No. 5, Merrimack County, NH). Timothy, his son Ephraim, and son Paul who is described as deceased, are on a list of settlers who have improved their land and are petitioning for recognition of their claims.[20] 1749 (Wrentham, Norfolk, MA). Timothy and Ephraim do not appear on the 1749 list of New Hopkinton settlers, or any subsequent list, so they likely sold their land and relocated to Wrentham, MA at this time.[20] 7 Sep 1767 (Cumberland, Providence, RI) Timothy Nolton of Cumberland and Martha his wife sell 4 acres and a house in Cumberland to John Ellis.[21] Death and Probate

Will (4 Jan 1768) Cumberland, Providence, RI. In his Will made in 1768 and probated in 1770, Timothy's heirs are stated as his daughters Abigail and Betty, and "Heirs of sons Paul and Ephraim Knowlton." Death (24 Aug 1770) Cumberland, Providence, RI. Sources
