About Titus Bonney

GEDCOM Note

The marriage record of Titus Bonney and Anna Pierce is found in Cornwall Vital Records Volume 1, page 104 (LDS Microfilm 1516243) and reads: "This may Certify that Titus Bonney and Anna Pierce of Cornwall were Intermarried on the 21st Day of February A.D. 1771 by the Reverend Hezekiah Gold of Cornwall. Recorded 22nd Febr. 1771. Teft(?) John Deine Town Clerk" (Note: Their son John's birth is also recorded on same page as born 27 May 1772) The marriage of my Anna Pierce and Titus Bonney is also recorded in Pembroke Vital Records 243. However, the Reverend Hezekiah Gold, who married Titus and Anna, is recorded in the First Congregational Church records as a Reverend of this church in Cornwall, CT. I have heard that often times a marriage was recorded in the townships of both spouses in order to give both families sufficient notification of the marriage. This may confuse Pierce researchers as to the place of marriage for Titus Bonney and Anna Pierce and place their marriage at Cornwall CT. Source: Website of Don Dickenson "Titus Bonney was the son of Perez Bonney and Ruth (Snow) Bonney. He moved from Pembroke, Massachusetts to Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut with his family in 1760. The family settled on Clark Hill along the Cornwall/Goshen line. On April 10, 1769 Titus Bonney "of Goshen" purchased 1 acre of common land in Cornwall from Thomas Tanner (Cornwall Deed Book 3, page 123) In 1771, Titus married Anna Pierce, the daughter of Joshua Pierce and Hopestill Holloway. On December 21, 1778 Titus Bonney and others, including Levi Bonney, were appointed to be "Surveyors of Highways for the year ensuing" (Cornwall Town Records, page 100). On December 1, 1781 he was among those appointed to be a "Committee for Schools for the ensuing year" (Cornwall Town Records, page 130). On December 2, 1782 Titus Bonney was again appointed to the Committee for Schools for the next year (Cornwall Town Records, page 136). On December 7, 1789 he was again appointed to the Committee for Schools for the next year (Cornwall Town Records, page 166). On December 1, 1794 Titus was again appointed to the Committee for Schools for the next year (Cornwall Town Records, page 181). At a Town Meeting on December 2, 1799 he was appointed to be a "Surveyor of Highways" (Cornwall Town Records, page 196). On November 16, 1801 he was again appointed to be one of the "Surveyors of Highways" for the next year (Cornwall Town Records, page 205). Titus and Anna remained in Cornwall until 1813 when they moved to Nelson, Portage County, Ohio with their eldest son John Bonney, and their son-in-law Joshua Bradford Sherwood. Their John died in Portage County in 1814. Titus and Anna's youngest son, Rev. William Bonney, died in Ohio on November 26, 1839. William's only son, Samuel, and his wife Catherine were missionaries in China. They had no children and Samuel died in Canton, China in July 1864. Titus died at age 82 years, 8 months on February 16, 1826 and was buried in Nelson Township, Portage County, Ohio. Anna died at age 89 in March, 1838 and was buried in the same cemetery in Portage County, Ohio.
