About Teunis Jansen van Pelt

Immigration: 1663 "Rosebud"

Occupation: Fisher

Note: He was the sponsor and 'Patroon' of the New Utrecht community.

He immigrated in 1663 on the 'Rosebud' with his brother Matthys and their families.

1999 article by Dorothy A Koenig and 2000 article by Gerald James Parsons

Teunis Jansen Lanen Van Pelt and his twin sister Elizabeth, children of Jan [Joannes] and Catharina Bakelmans, were Bapt. 5 May 1622 in St. Martin's Roman Catholic Church in Overpelt, Province of Limburg, Belgium, which at that time was in the Principality of Liege. [His latin name was Anthonius].

His family name was actually Laenen, but he was recorded as 'van Pelt' meaning 'from Pelt' when he sailed from Amsterdam, The Netherlands to New York in 1663 in "the Rosetree [Roseboom]" Teunis was a fairly recent immigrant to Tuil, The Netherlands from his home of Pelt, Belgium that he had left in 1639" to go north to seek his fortune about the time of his mother's second marriage.

Peter Nouwt commented "During the period 1636-1647 the Company of Captain Peter De Swart was staying in the area of Tielerwaard, not far from the village of Tuil. At some time Mathijs Jansz. Lanen (prior to 1640) and Adriaen Lambertsz. Smeets (prior to 1647) must have joined this Company, but we do not know exactly when or where. Teunis Jansz. Lanen is mentioned as a peddler (1649-1652), but it is possible that he too was a soldier originally."

Three children in 1648, 1651, 1652 are recorded in the Register of Baptisms of the Dutch Reformed Church of Tuil as being children of "Teunis, peddler by the dyke ."

Dorothy A Koenig wrote: "Finally, we can make an educated guess why the Smith and Lanen van Pelt families emigrated to New Netherland. On pages 80 and 83 of 'A Van Tuyl Chronicle: 650 Years of a Dutch-American Family,' by R L Van Tuyl and J N A Groenendijk [Los Altos, CA: Rory Van Tuyl, 1996] we learn that the River Waal had not flooded for years. Then came severe floods in 1651, 1658, and in December 1662. On page 30 of H. van Heiningen's 'Dijken en dijkdoorbraken in het Nederlandse rivierengebied [Den Haag: 1978] is the description of the lay of the land in the Tuil area that December, 'The turmoil and the floods progressed until the land was completely covered, many feet deep, with the water as high as the dike on both sides. The loveliness of the fields was smothered beneath the waters.'"

Listed as passengers on the Rosetree that left The Netherland on 15 March 1663.

  • "Theunis Jansen, from the country of Liege, wife and six children, 18, 16, 14, 9, 7, and 2 years old.
  • Thys [Mattys] Jansen, from the country of Liege, and four children 17, 15, 13, and 11 years old"

Teunis died in "The Van Pelt Manor House" in New Utrecht, Long Island about 1700.

GEDCOM Note

Emigrated 1663 from Lucyk (Liege, Belgium). The Van Pelt house built in1664 still stands (in 1991) in New Utrecht, Brooklyn, NY and is a museum. He was often called "Tonis the Fisher" Teunis Jansen Laenen van Peelt is the full manner in which the supposed elder of the two immigrant brothers signed his name to documents. The fact that Teunis spelled out "van Peelt," as he did, is one of the proofs that his ancestors, if not he himself, came from "the Peel," a tract of country in the nature of a morass, located both in the southern part of Holland and the northern part of Belgium. It occupies about sixty square miles of land between two large rivers, the Meuse and the Aa. In Belgium "the Peel" is in the province of Limburg. Teunis and his brother came from the province of Liege. The name of Teunis wife , who came with him to America in March, 1663, is not certainly known. But his children were aged 18, 16, 14, 9, 7 and 2 years, and were perhaps the six first named of the following nine children, which he had by both his first and second wife: Jan; Anthony; Elizabeth; Magdalena; Aert; Wouter; Hendrick; Teuntje and Rebecca. Teunis married as his second wife Gertrude Jans, ("widow of John Otter", disputed), and located at first in Brooklyn. He was by occupation a fisherman. Between 1675 and 1684 he made four or more purchases of land at New Utrecht, L. I., NY and appeared to prosper. He signed his name "Tonis Jansen Lanen Van Pelt."

Biography

Anthonius Laenen, was baptized on 5 May 1622 in Overpelt, Limburg, Prinsbisdom Luik [1] Teunis Jansen or Tonis Jansen Lanen Van Peelt, as written by himself, from the land of "Luyck (Liege), emigrated in 1663 with w. and 6 children from Netherlands; aboard the ship Rooseboom - "The Rosetree. He gave oath of allegiance in 1687 at New Utrecht, Kings County, New York.[2]

He married 1st (sup.) Grietje Jans; m. 2nd Aug. 6, 1696, Gertrude Jans widow of John Otter. Bought Apl. 7, 1670, of David Jochems of N. Y. land near to " Rechawyck" (Br"), previously granted to Ryer Lambertse, cong. 57 morgens, located in Br. Suppose he sold these premises to Jan Messerole. Bought land in N. U. in 1675, '78, and '80; on Dongan's patent of 1686; took the oath of allegiance there in 1687; and was known as Tunis the fisher, that being probably his principal occupation. Signed his name Tonis Jansen Lanen Van Peelt.

Teunis Van Pelt emigrated from Liege, Belgium in March, 1663 on the ship Rosetree. This group settled in the
southwestern part of Long Island in what is now Brooklyn. The community was called New Utrecht. It was located
about 1.5 miles north of what is now Coney Island and about one mile west of the narrows separating Long Island from Staten Island.

Teunis Van Pelt was the principal founder of the New Utrecht settlement and became “patron” or mayor. The wife of Teunis was Grietje. They had six children and a brother Matthias (Thys) Jansen Van Pelt.

Anthony Van Pelt was baptized Teunis Van Pelt, married Marie Drageau and settled on Staten Island around 1700. This may have been a son of the original Van Pelt immigrant … or … possibly a Swaim descendent that took on the surname of Van Pelt. This is unclear. The account that Anthony was a descendent of the Van Pelt immigrant was put forward by Orra Eugene Monnette in First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey 1664-1714 published in 1934. It is also described in Mabel Wood Swaim’s book The Swaim Family. Some claimed that not all Swaim’s descend from Thys Barentsen and that some descend from Anthony Teunissen Van Pelt. There are also family stories passed down that mentions the name change from Van Pelt to Swaim. Note: The 2007 Swaim Y-DNA study included a descendant of Teunis Jansen Lanen. None of the Swaim descendants from North Carolina ancestors matched the Van Pelt descendent. This study disproved a Swaim – Van Pelt connection.

The DNA results rules out that this Anthony Swaim descends from the Van Pelt immigrant. However it does not necessarily rule out that a Barentsen descendent (or his descendents) could have used a surname of Van Pelt for a period of time before the descendents began using Swaim as a surname. The documented surnames used by Barentsen descendents were quite chaotic in the 1600s and early 1700s.

The key point is that essentially all Swaims in the United States descend from Mathijs Barentsz aka Thys Barentsen.
