About Torger Hoseth Larsen

Torger Larsen was born on the farm Hosetaug at the intersection of the Orkla and Hella Rivers near the town of Rennebu, Norway. As a boy Torger herded sheep in the summer in the nearby mountains and worked in the hayfields. He was confirmed at age 14 and shortly after started to learn the tailoring trade. He worked at it over the next several winters. Near age 19-20 his brother Knute sent him money for a ticket to America. His mother found out and sent the money back to Knute. Torger wasn't to be denied and in 1891 at age 22 he emigrated to America. He crossed the Atlantic from Liverpool to New York City on the ship City of Chicago on 27 June 1891. His first year in Wisconsin was spent working in the woods near Long Lake. Tiring of this drudgery, Torger moved to Necada, Wisconsin, then Stanley and finally to Chippewa Falls. In all three cities he worked at the tailoring trade.

He married Eveline Kolseth on November 14, 1895 in Chippewa Falls. In 1900 the couple moved to Rice Lake where they bought a house and a 40 acre farm about a mile west of town. The house had two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a pantry and an attic. The barn was built for eight Jersey cows and bull and a team of horses.Torger tailored by day and farmed in the evenings, walking to town each day. Sometime after 1903 he sold the farm and bought a house on Phipps Avenue in Rice Lake. Here his wife died in April 1910 leaving him with 5 children. Torger hired Helene Tandberg as a housekeeper & nanny. This arrangement led to marriage. Supposedly the honeymoon was a cruise to Norway. He tried tailoring in partnership with A. Erstad and later bought a shop from Peterson & Lindberg in Rice Lake. In 1914 he bought a new farm in the community of Stanfold, five miles from Rice Lake. Torger continued to work as a tailor by day and farmed in the evenings. During the early days of the Depression he started a tailor shop of his own at 17 West Eau Claire St. He later moved to the Central Hotel building where he was working when he died. His son Martin learned the trade and made a career of it operating in Rice Lake under the name Larsen's Togs.

Torger went through several name changes in America. He arrived as Torger Hoset (named after the family farm in Norway). This he dropped and took the name Larson which was being used by his brother Knute. Later he changed the spelling to Larsen. He also went by several first names, Tom, Thomas, Thor & Torger at various times.

Torger served as the Treasurer of the Golden Valley School, which his children attended. He served as the superintendent of the Stanfold Sunday School for a number of years. He seldom missed a church service.

Torger had been ill with cancer for nearly a year. He died in a Rice Lake hospital.
