About Totila, king of the Ostrogoths

He was King of the Ostrogoths (541). He succeeded his uncle King Ildibad, who was killed at a palace banquet (with the brief reign of Eraric intervening). His uncle Ildibad was a Visigoth, a nephew of one of the Visigoth kings.

During the reign of Totila's predecessor Witigis, the Ostrogoths had suffered a crushing defeat by the Byzantines (539). In 543, under Totila, the Ostrogoths re-took Naples, but in 544 the Byzantine general Belisarius took Rome. In 546, after a year long seige, the Ostrogoths cut the aqueducts, sacked Rome, tore down its walls, and set it on fire. Belisarius re-captured the city the same year. Totila besieged Rome again, taking it in 550. In 550 and 551, he reconquered Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. However, he was defeated and killed in 552 by a Byzantine army under general Narses.
