About Toussaint Briel

Tousein Bryel

Probably came to New Amsterdam before 1645 May 07 when he seems to have witnessed a baptism (Cosyn Briel)

Block C, #24 of Stokes.... Toussaint Briel, a French Huguenot, and his wife, Maria Coutaine, lived in this little
house for twenty years. He died in the summer of 1671.-Rec. N. Am., VI: 320. She
survived him but a year, leaving the cottage by will to Lidia Mintern, wife of Itlene Guyon. The deacons of the Dutch Church administered her estate.-Liber Deeds, B: 189; cj. Book of Records of Deeds E5 Transfers (etc.), 1665-1672 (translated), 208-9·

There were Briels among the early members of the French Church, no doubt descendants of this settler.-List of Names in An Historical Sketch of the Eglise Francoise a la Nouvelle York, by Rev. Alfred V. Wittmeyer

Perhaps the same as COSYN Briel ... as in the following baptism 1645 May 07; Casar Alberto alias Pieter de Italiaen; Marles; Jan Monfoort, Cosyn Briel, Joris Rapalje, Sara Planck, Janneken Rapalje

Fernow, Vol. 5. There were 23 regulations and the 6th "continued Barent Jacobzen Cool as Elder (overseer or foreman), to whom* they ahaii be bound to show all obedience." For many years, Toussaint Briel worked as a warehouse porter.

Richard Nicolls, Governour, etc., to Anna Negrine, a free negro. Confirmation dated Oct. 19, 1667. — Liber Patents, II: 126 (Albany).

Confirms a ground-brief from Director Kieft to above Anna, then described as the widow of Andries d'Angola, for a "piece of woodland lying before Pieter Tambeets (Tambour's) land, and behind Tosyn Briel's, stretching east-and-by-north, 51 rods; north 30 rods; north-north-west (west-north-west), 54 rods; in all amounting to about 6 acres or 3 morgen and 2 rods, which said patent or ground-brief bears date Feb. 8,1647."

Friday, 7 th Novemb' 1659: In the City Hall. Present the Presiding Burgomaster Olof Stevenzen Cortlant.

Barent Jacobzen Cool, Crein Jacobs, Toussein Bryel appear in Court declaring, on being asked their experience in their quality, that Jan Cornells" of Vlensburgh has again returned to his duty as carrier of beer and the appendages thereto, and that they have scarcely over six guilders per week, and at this time when there are no ships, they can well perform the duties; and as it is necessary one among them should be head, the Burgomaster chose thereunto Barent Jansen Cool, he being the oldest.
