On November 30, 1672, Jean Talon, Intendant de la justice de la police et des finances de la Nouvelle-France, granted to Sieur Toupin, father and son, a grant of half a league frontage and a league deep along the St. Lawrence River, half below and half above la Pointe aux Ecureuils. The conditions for the grant were typical and not onerous. He must settle there himself, grant land to settlers, provide oak for building ships for his Majesty the King and alert the King on the discovery of minerals. Since the beginning of New France, a few influential persons had been granted fiefs, particularly in the Quebec region, without having to take possession by living on the grants or by the royal confirmation. La Pointe aux Ecureuils had been given to a member of the Lauzon family, under the title of Belair. However, Jean Talon does not mention either Belair or Lauzon, contrary to all his previous acts. There was a Bélair de Maure in St. Augustine and Bélair at la Pointe aux Ecureuils.
Family Toupin, originally from Normandy, was beneficiary of this seigneury, after an act of religious profession of one of the daughters at L’Hotel-Dieu de Quebec. The father’s name was Toussaint. Exactly when he came to New France is not known. This mysterious man had a coat and shoes Haude (trousers), three muskets and old tabar (short coat of arms of kings).
Toussaint Toupin was at the Jesuit mission at Sillery, where he was the godfather at the baptism of a native child on April 25, 1639. He was therefore in the region before that date. We know he was born in 1616 and he was a friend of Pierre Boucher, the future governor of Trois-Rivieres. These two young boys had sent to live with the natives and learn their language. Both are mentioned several times in "le journal des Jésuites" in the 1640s. He even married the sister of Pierre Boucher, Margurite, in late December or early January 1646. At that time he was living, on the outskirts of Trois-Rivière on a grant of three arpents with a habitation on it. He sold in June 1647, when he moved to Quebec City.
On June 14, 1650, Olivier Tardif, Seigneur de Beaupré, granted him land in Chateau-Richer, at Saut à la Puce. He lived there until 1655, renting it out and settling in Quebec, at the foot of Mountain Hill.
Toussaint Toupin was primarily a navigator. Having sold his first land grant at Trois-Rivières and leased his second at Saut à la Puce, he first bought two small boats and ended up with one an eighteen (18) tons.
As a result of his trading dealings at Anticosti Island in Ville-Marie, he acquired a certain financial ease and influence. This was in addition to the influence he had gained as result of his two marriages. The first was to the sister of Pierre Boucher, Governor of Trois-Rivieres. The second was to Marie Bourdon, Jean Gloria's widow and niece of Jean Bourdon, procureur général et ingénieur en chef de la Nouvelle-France. Toussaint's marriage to Marie Bourdon Notre-Dame de Quebec on June 3ed, 1669. was a double wedding. His son, Jean Baptiste married his new stepmother’s daughter Marie Gloria at the same time.
Three familes named Toupin settled in Nouvelle France. The one founded by Toussaint was named Toupin du Sault. When Jean, Toussaint’s son, came into her inheritance, he adopted the name of Toupin-du-Sault, dropping “la Puce”.
