Umphray Kirkpatrick of Torthorwald

An "H" is later added to Umphray's name in early records, and this caused much confusion in those records between Umphray,Umfred,Humphrey and Winifredus.These names are nearly as common as Roger. Umphrey also received a charter for the Torthorwald lands from King Robert the Bruce on 16th July,1322

Married - Isabel supposedly brought Duncan the lands of Torthorwald as her dowry. But her father,Sir David Thorald of Torthorwald,apparently also owned estates in Anandale and Kirkpatrick-Fleming.He was a staunch supporter of the English during the War of independance, and as a result ,it is said that all his lands were confiscated and bestowed upon those loyal to the cause , and this is given as the reason Duncan came to possess Thorthorwald. There is no traditional early history of Torthorwald as there is with Closeburn.

The Torthorwald lands were exchanged in later years by his descendant Duncan (Last Lord of Torthorwald,Laird of Ross) for the lands of Ross ,also in Dumfrieshire,which belonged to the Carlyle family.
