Most of her ancestors were from the formerly sovereign countries, the Electorate and Kingdom of Hanover, and the city-state of Bremen, both in modern northwestern Germany. Some of her ancestors were from today's Baltic states, then in Imperial Russia. Her father's grandmother Mary Ladson Robertson was an American from Charleston (S.C.) of mainly British descent, with some French, German and Swiss ancestors.
