He served as High Sheriff of County Kerry in 1851, Member of Parliament (MP) for County Kerry from 1852-1871, and Lord Lieutenant for County Kerry from 1866 until his death. In 1866, he became Honourary Colonel of the 4th Battalion (Kerry Militia), Royal Munster Fusiliers. He also served as a Senator of the Royal University of Ireland.

In 1871, upon his father's death, he became 4th Earl of Kenmare and 10th Baronet (Browne of Mohaliffe, County Kerry). He was invested a Knight of the Order of Saint Patrick (KP) and appointed a Privy Counsellor (PC).

A Roman Catholic, he was a generous supporter of Catholic charities and institutions.

He and his countess hosted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their 1861 visit to County Kerry, and later hosted the future monarchs Edward VII and George V.

His funeral was widely attended, and included the bishop, a representative of Edward VII (Major General Pole-Carew), and the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His remains were laid to rest at the family's vault in the Blessed Virgin's Chapel at Saint Mary's Cathedral.
