The Eichman Family
Written from memories of Sister Anatolia, Helen Walski, and other children of Paul and Martha (Kulas) Eichman.
In the early 1860's, Valentine Eichman and his wife Mary (Wantock) left Nordlingon, Germany, and came to the United States. During this time many people immigrated from that area which was called Prussia. There had been a revolution and a type of socialist monarchy was in power. A person had to belong to the right family in order to own land. The rest of the people had to work for the land owners. These workers were treated no better than slaves. The only money they had was the small amount received from selling vegetables from their garden plots. Valentine was a farmer, so most likely he belonged to the working class. They could no longer tolerate such oppression, so they left their homes and went to the United States, which had plenty of land to be settled. Some members of the family came before the others to establish a home. They then sent for the other members of the family. It is thought that all of Valentine's brothers, sisters and their families came during these years. It is likely they came by way of New York, as most immigrants did. [Actually by way of Quebec, Canada.- RJP] The next stop was Trempealeau. Valentine bought some land around Trempealeau, but it was too steep and wooded for farming. They looked around and found land in Holcomb Coulee where they finally settled. (There is a land patent in his name, Walantine Eichman, so he was a homesteader too. - RJP) It took years from the time they left the Old Country, till they were permanently settled in their new home. The woods had to be cleared and the lumber was used for the buildings. Valentine's brother, Anton Eichman, is thought to be one of the first settlers in Winona. (Highly unlikely, as Winona's first Kashubian settlers arrived in 1859, and Anton was born in 1849. - JH) Mary had been married before. Her husband died of an illness leaving her with a small son, August.[sic Charles] Valentine and Mary's children, Andrew and Paulina (Lena), were born in Germany. Joe was born on the boat coming to America. Mary Tuschner, Paul (born in 1871), Stella Walski and Frank were born in this country. Valentine died at a young age [58] in Holcomb Coulee. Mary lived for a time with her son, Paul, and his wife, Martha, before she went to live in Winona, where she died some years later.
