VENTURA DE LOS REYES
Ventura de los Reyes is best known for his connection with The Spanish Cortes of 1810. He was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, in 1743.
De los Reyes became famous overnight when he signed the Cadiz Constitution of 1812.
History refers him as a supporter of Diego Silang's revolt in Ilocos in 1752 when the British occupied the city of Manila. After peace was established, he returned to Vigan and engaged in the indigo business. He made a fortune.
De los Reyes was charitable and friendly. He minded his own business regardless of what others thought of him. He lived a true Christian life.
In 1810 the Spanish Government granted the colonies in America and in the Philippines representation in the Cortes. Deputies were chosen by the capital cities. The man chosen by the city of Manila was de los Reyes. He arrived in Spain in 1811. He worked for the suppression of the galleon trade with Mexico. This was proposed by the governor of the Philippines. This was favorably acted upon on September 14, 1813.
Ventura de los Reyes died at a ripe old age. He was one of those liberty-loving citizens who worked not for money, neither for fame, but for the progress of his country.
