About (Very Rev Mother Marie-du-Sacré-Cœur)
Overview
Marie-Josephte Fitzbach left home at the age of 13 due to family need she was employed as a domestic servant in Quebec City. Her employer, Mr. François-Xavier Roy, asked her to marry him after his wife died. Mr Roy died in 1833, leaving Marie-Josephte a widow with 3 children. Her youngest died in 1846. Her remaining two daughters entered the Sisters of Charity of Quebec, fulfilling their mother's dream of becoming a nun. Marie-Josephte became a resident at the Hospice of Charity to be closer to her daughters when she was 43. She was then requested to take charge of a shelter for women released from jail on 31 December 1849 she accepted. Marie-Josephte and a companion therefore opened St. Magdalen’s Refuge (Asile de Ste-Madeleine) in Quebec City, on January 11, 1850. On February 2, 1856, when the Good Shepherd of Quebec was established as a religious community, Marie-Josephte took the name of Mother Mary of the Sacred Heart. She became the first superior of the Institute on the following February 7th, with a three-year mandate. In 1997, the Cause of Beatification of Marie-Josephte Fitzbach began being studied in Rome.
