About Vice Admiral George Murray of Pitcaithly, of Pitcaithly RN

Vice Admiral George Murray (22 August 1741 – 17 October 1797) was a Royal Navy officer and politician. He was the third son of the Jacobite general Lord George Murray.

Murray joined the Royal Navy in 1758 as a midshipman.[1] In 1765 he became commander of the sloop HMS Ferret.[1] Promoted Captain he commanded HMS Renown, HMS Adventure, HMS Levant and HMS Cleopatra.[1] He commanded the Cleopatra at the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1781.[2] From 1782 he commanded HMS Irresistible.

He was elected Member of Parliament for Perth burghs in 1790 but gave up his seat in 1796. Resuming his naval career he commanded HMS Defence from 1790.[1] He was appointed Commander-in-Chief at Chatham in 1792 and went on to command HMS Duke and then HMS Glory. He was made Commander-in-Chief, North American Station in 1794. He almost completely cleared North American waters of French men-of-war and privateers.

In 1784 he married Hon. Wilhelmina King, daughter of Thomas King, 5th Baron King; they had no children

He returned to England in 1796 and died the following year.

(104) George Murray, sixth son of John (No. 102), born 4th October 1694; died 11th October 1760. He fought for the Jacobites in 1715, 1719, and 1745, and held high command in the Prince's army at Prestonpans and Culloden. He escaped to Holland and was attainted. On 3rd June 1728 he married Amelia, daughter of Dr James Murray of Glencarse and Strowan (No. 181, c). She was served heir to her father 30th July 1754, and died 29th March 1766, leaving:

  • 104(a) John (No. 105 below).
  • 104(b) Major-General James Murray of Strowan, born 19th March 1734; died unmarried 19th March 1794. He was M.P. for Perthshire 1773-80 and 1784-94.
  • 104(c) Vice- Admiral George Murray of Pitcaithly, born 22nd August 1741; died s.p. 17th October 1797. He married, 13th May 1784, Wilhelmina, daughter of Thomas, fifth Lord King. She died 29th December 1795.
