Biography

|provincie=Zuid-Holland}}Vincent van Gogh was the son of Johannes van Gogh and Johanna van der Ven, and the grandfather of the painter, Vincent Willem van Gogh. He had perhaps been named after his own father's uncle, the successful sculptor Vincent vanGogh (1729–1802). He received his degree of theology at the University of Leiden in 1811. He married E. H. Vrijdag≤ref name="Marriage">Marriage in Amsterdam, 1811≤/ref>, and the couple had twelve children - six sons, three of whom became art dealers, and six daughters, one who died in infancy. Vincent and his wife lived long and happily together, first at the parsonageof Benschop, then at Ochten, and from 1822 at Breda, where his wife died in 1857, and where he remained until his death.≤ref name="Death">Death 1874≤/ref>≤br>
