It is with deep sadness that we regret to announce the passing of Viola McCarthy who passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the Northside Guest Home, where she resided for the past year.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Levi and Rita (Bugden) Bonnar.
Viola was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 ladies auxiliary. She enjoyed playing darts, bowling and bingo and music; wherever there was a song you could hear her voice.
She will also be sadly missed by her pride and joy, Brandon and Janaya O'Toole.
She is survived by four daughters, Charmaine (Bobby) O'Toole, Sydney Mines, Wanda (Milton) Vacon, Dartmouth, Alice McGee, Dartmouth, and Shirley (Steve) Kanto, Hamilton, Ont.; four sons, Kenneth, Alberta, Michael (Kim), Dartmouth, Wayne, Toronto, Joseph (Linda), Sydney Mines; 13 grandchildren; sisters, Irene Donovan, May Ryan, Linda MacNeil, Shirley Salisbury, and Jean McGean; brothers, Melvin and Winston; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Patrick John McCarthy, and second husband, John William Ross, sister, Annabelle and brothers, Jimmy and Chesley (Dubby).
Visitation for Viola McCarthy will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Friday, July 2), from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Maj. Daniel Roode officiating. Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation.
