History of Willem Van Dalssen (ca. 1697 - 1757) by Garry Bryant Willem Van Dalssen Schoolmaster (abt. 1697 - 1757) Willem was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands, about 1697/1698. Came to America with his parents Jan Van Dalssen and Annatje Van Raetsvelt, and brother and sisters around the turn of the Eighteenth Century [George Olin Zabriskie, "The Van Dalssen -Van Dalsem Family: Five Generations," The Genealogical Magazine Of New Jersey. Volume 39, 1964. Pp. 67-80 & 111-115. Genealogical Society of New Jersey. (FHL-USA/CAN 974.9 B 4 vol. 39, also microfilm # 78145, item #4.) (NOTE - All data from this source except where noted.); Emily Hixson (compiler), Terry Trails, (Loma Linda, California: Self published, 1985) Pp. V-1 to V-6,"The Van Dalssen - Van Dalsem Family."]. He lived in or near the town of Tappan, New York, and later moved to Belleville, New Jersey. Willem married to Annatje (Johanna) Buytenhoff probably at Tappan in 1716/1717. Both of them had their church membership transferred from the Second River Church of Belleville to the Schraalenburgh Reformed Church at Bergenfield, New Jersey, in 1736. This is the church that Reverend Guiliam Bertholf was pastor at for many years, but the Van Dalssen's missed Bertholf's ministry, for he had died about a decade before they joined. Van Dalssen served as a schoolmaster in New York City, and he took the oath of adjuration and made a declaration of fidelity to Great Britain on 1 August 1745, becoming a naturalized citizen of the Colonies. Willem Van Dalssen's death is recorded in the Old Reformed Church in New York City for 17July 1757, and his wife died two years later on 14 February 1759 in the same city [Theodore M. Banta, Year Book of The Holland Society of New York. (1899) P. 200, "Burials in Dutch Reformed Church, New York City." (FHL-USA/CAN microfilm # 12199.)]. Willem and Annatje (Buytenhoff) Van Dalssen had six children. CHILDREN 1. Geertruy Van Dalssen - Born 26 August 1718, christened 28 August 1718, at Tappan ["Baptisms At Tappan," History of Rockland County. P. 6.]. Married to Merselius Garra brands, 4 children. 2. Johannes Van Dalssen - Born 24 May 1720, christened 23 June 1720, at Tappan ["BaptismsAt Tappan," History of Rockland County. P. 7.]. Died as infant. 3. P. 8.] Married 1st Geertie Kuyper on 23 November 1747, 6 children; 2nd as her 2nd husband to Magdalena Christie (1747-?), 1 child . 4.
