(One of many similar projects) This one focuses on the DeVries - New Netherland blacks and mixed-blood
The base couple is: Capt. Jan De Vries and Lare (Hilary) Criolyo, his wife/slave They had one surviving son: Jan De Vries II from whom a numerous de Vries line descends. There are other De Vries lines of the same area.
More and more John De Vries line are being traced to the 21st century on Geni. If you know of more profiles, please add them.
Lare (or Hilary) Criolyo >>>>>> Herbert Smith Hyatt • 1859-1949 •
Another descendant of Lare Criolyo through her 2nd husband
Lare (or Hilary) Criolyo is Abner R. Mann's 7th great grandmother
The up-to-date non-private profiles are:
The painting/profile picture is not Hilary Criolyo... It is only chosen for inclusion here in an iconic way to draw attention to the story of a slave/wife of a white Dutchman who regarded her as his property. After her husband/owner Captain de Vries drowned, Lare (aka Hilarie) went on to marry a freed slave (Lovyse (Louis) van Angola) and bear several additional children.
We do not know Lare's dates of birth & death. The last appearance of her name is as a witness of a baptisms in New York:
1672 Feb 03; (black parents) Swaen van Angola & Annetie Abrahams; (child) Annatje; (witnesses)Claes Manuel, Larie
note: "Larie" is another variant of Hillarie
Claes Manuel is her son-in-law who, in addition to her son Jan de Vries II, held title to land in the Tappan Patent...
Beware that there are more than one Dutch De Vries family that figure in to early Tappan genealogies: 1) Jan Van Dalfsen (Van Dalsen) also know as Jan De Vries 2) the mullato descendants of Capt. Jan De Vries who drowned inthe wreck of the Princess Amelia off Wales. Captain Jan de Vries & Lare (or Hilary) Criolyo
Was the last de Vries in his branch to have ties to the East Coast. The family became Mormon and went to Utah. His grandfather was born November 13, 1800 in Clarkston Township, Rockland County, New York (place of death unknown). His father was the Mormon Pioneer.
