Walter was born between 1610 and 1620

"Walter Cook settled at Weymouth, Norfolk, Mass in 1643; removed to Mendon 1664 (was freeman of Weymouth 1653, was one of incorporators of town of "Meridon" 1659; the family were Quakers originally."


Walter's daughter, Hannah COOKE Albee, was the 8th gr-grandmother of my husband, through her son, Benjamin, and his wife, Abiel WHEELOCK, then their son, Obediah, and his wife, Jean MOSS b. Scotland. President George W. Bush, and his siblings are the 8th gr-grandchildren of John Cooke, and his wife, Naomi THAYER, who were the 7th gr-grandparents of Barbara PIERCE Bush, through Mrs. Bush's dad.

Walter Cook was known to be in Weymouth, MA as early as 1643, and wasa freeman there in 1653. In 1663-64 he removed to Mendon, MA with his sons & 2 daughters. He subsequently acquired land in Milford, Bellingham,Wrentham and on the Rhode Island line. He was among the original proprietors ofQuinshipaug Plantation. He is mentioned on pg 174 of History of Weymouth,Mass., Vol 3,

His will was probated 5 Jan 1697-98 (Suffolk Probate Records 8:88).To his wife Catherine the use of his estate. John, being the eldest son, tohave the great bible and ten acres; son Nicholas to have ten acres. Upon his children Hannah, Samuel, Nicholas and Experience, besides what he formerly gavethem, the reversion of his moveable after his wife's decease. Son JohnCooke, sole executor, to whom administration was granted.

When Mendon was burned by the Indians in 1675, he took refugeelsewhere, along with the other inhabitants. It is thought he may have returned toWeymouth, but in any case, he returned to Mendon after the Indian War ended. Hewas very prominent in towm affairs as a selectman, and as a member of various committees in sharing out the various allotments of land. He was active in the church, and "paid his rates" in support of the ministry. He was a man respected by the community and was a "power for good".

Children mentioned in his will include: John, Hannah, Samuel,Nicholas and Experience. He left his real estate to John and Nicholas, and the last four above to have the reversion of his moveable estate, besides what he had already given them, after the death of his wife. The witnesses to his will were:

Joseph White, Sr.; Samel Read, Sr.; and Josiah Chapin. (Suffolk Co.,MA Probate Records, Vol. 8, pg 88)

His place of birth is unknown.


Walter married Experience unknown. Walter married Catherine Aldrich. Walter Cook was born in 1618 in England.1 He died on Wednesday, 5 January 1695 in Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, at age 77 years.1
