Walter Eli Clark, 1st Governor of Alaska Territory

Clark was an American journalist and newspaper publisher. In addition to his journalistic activities, he served as the last Governor of the District of Alaska from 1909-1912, and the first Governor of Alaska Territory from 1912-1913.

Clark died in a Charleston hospital at 1:27p.m., two hours after suffering a heart attack at his home. 1598 Virginia Street E. He had been in "comparatively" good health recently, Mr. Clark had suffered recurring heart attacks in recent years

One of the city's prominent civic leaders. Mr. Clark came to Charleston on April 16, 1914, as proprietor of the Charleston Mail, which now is The Charleston Daily Mail. Mr. Clark's personal editorial column, "At This Hour," which appeared on the front page of the Daily Mail was one of the widely read columns of the state.

Born in Ashford, Connecticut on January 7, 1869, the son of Oren Andrus Clark was graduated from Wesleyan University.

When Mr. Clark came to Charleston a year later he began a campaign to make Charleston the "Rose City of the East," and was the founder of the Charleston Rose Society, serving as its first president. He took an active interest in the society and took part each year in the annual Rose Show. At the time of his death he was the society's honorary president. The success of the Rose Show won him wide recognition and he was elected president of the National Rose Society, serving in 1928 and 1929. He also was an ardent believer in the Charleston Community Chest, of which he was one of the founders.

Mr. Clark was a member of Kanawha Presbyterian Church, the Kanawha and Edgewood Country Clubs, and the "Metropolitan and Chevy Chase Clubs in Washington. D.C.

Mr. Clarks first marriage was to Lucy Harrison Norvell of Washington. D.C.. and Lynchburg. Virginia; who died in 1920. He married Mrs Juliet Staunton Clark Clay in Charleston in August of 1929. She survives. Also is a daughter. Miss Juliet Clark, at home.

Service will be at 4 p. rn. tomorrow in Kanawha Presbyterian Church. Dr. Bernard E. Vanderbeek. minister, will officiate and burial will be in the Mountain View Addition of Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jack Maurice, Vint Jennings, Dick Hudson. Southhall Burke, JB Martin, Howard Wolf, Clyde Jenkins. Arthur McQueen, Robert Thompson, Frank Polk; who are all employees of the Daily Mail.
