About Walter Clapham Mountain

Walter Clapham Mountain was grandson of Mrs. Letheridge the first white woman born in New Zealand. He was a boxer and athlete of note in Australia in his younger days, and later assisted his father at Purerua in running the well-known fish and canning Works. He farmed 8000 or 9000 acres with considerable success and was engaged in cattle-dealing all over the Auckland province. For many years he was a member of the Bay or Islands County Council, and he was also a Freemason (Gisborne Times, 24 April 1930, p. 2).
