About Walter ‘the Elder’ Spring

Biography

Walter Spring was the son of Annabella Spring and Thomas Spring.[1][2][3][4]

He served as High Sheriff of Kerry in 1609.[2] According to The Spring family of Suffolk and County Kerry, and branches in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, he married Mary Crosbie sometime before 1610.[5] Their children were:[5]

  1. Katherine Spring
  2. Edward Spring
  3. Annabella Spring

According to The Spring family of Suffolk and County Kerry, after Mary died, Walter remarried to Thomasine Browne.[5][6] This was probably in 1630.[7]

For a time, Walter lived at the Abbey of Killagha.[5]

Walter died on 30 June 1631 ("ult. die. Junii 1631").[5][6] Thomasine married Daniel Oge O'Sullivane in 1638.[8]

Research notes

  • Birth year guessed. Parents Annabelle and Thomas were said to have married post-1580, and Thomas died in 1597.[9]
  • Wife: according to The Peerage, Walter was married to Alice Blennerhassett.[3] This is believed to be incorrect, and it is thought that Walter's wife was actually Mary Crosbie, as stated on Wikipedia,[10] in "The Spring family of Suffolk and County Kerry, and branches in Australia, New Zealand and the USA",[5] and in the Old Kerry Records book?[4]
  • For interest, according to The Peerage, Alice and Walter's children were:[3]
    • Avice Spring
    • Edward Spring
  • According to Wikipedia and The Peerage, Walter was his parents' younger son,[2][3] but he is referred to as their eldest son in The Blennerhassett Pedigree chapter of the Old Kerry Records book (1872).[4]
