About Wi-ni We-no-nah Lowry

Find a Grave

Michael's grandfather, Thomas Lowry was a brother to my great, great grandmother Winny (Cherokee given name was Wi-ni We-no-nah)Lowry Wood. Both were born in the Smokey Mountains of N.C. They were Cherokee (or Cherokee/Lumbee Indians). I have an excellent photo of Wi-ni. She was b. in 1792, died in 1882...Laclede, Co., Mo. - Jo Ann Garza

WINI WINONA (LOWRY) WOOD

b. 1792 in the the heart of Indian Territory, Smokey Mountains of N.C.

d. 1882 in Laclede Co. Mo.

Her Cherokee name is pronounced WE-NE WE-NO-NAH. Her family called her WENAH. This, probably, is the only photo taken of her. I own it (you may see a copy of it, posted on line...but, the original is 'one of my most prized possessions'!). It belonged to one of her grandsons (Rev. Charles Wallace Wood..my paternal grandfather) and his wife, Ella, (Holman) Wood (her mother, also, was Cherokee...a mixed blood)....WENAH was my great great grandmother. Her father was born in 1760 and her mother, also, around that time....In Indian Territory......16 years before the American Revolution began!...the young girl in the photo, I don't know who she is. But, my guess is that she's, probably, a family member...as she has her hand lying on WENAH'S shoulder.....in a very protective manner. - Jo Ann Garza

Birth: 1795 Rowan County North Carolina, USA

Death: 1882 Oakland Laclede County Missouri, USA

Winny "Winioa" (Lowry) Wood was born about 1795 in North Carolina.

She was the oldest child and a daughter of William Lowry and Sarah. Sarah's last name we are not certain as she was Cherokee Indian. It is believed that William Lowry was part Cherokee too. Some think they lived around the Rowan County area of North Carolina. They moved to Tennessee briefly then on to Warren County Kentucky about 1810.

Her mother and father were buried some place in Warren County, Kentucky.

Winny "Winoia" Lowry married George Wood October 1814 near Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Winny died 1882 Laclede County, Missouri. She was reported as living with her daughter and son in law in the 1880 census of Laclede County, Missouri.
