Christian Friedrich Hempel (37), together with his wife, Wilhelmine Floraline Maria Elizabeth (nee Vetter) (39) and 5 children left Warte, Uckermark in Germany to settle in South Africa.

They sailed on the “Wilhelmburg” which left Hamburg on 19 October 1858 and arrived at East London, Eastern Cape Province on 13 January 1859.

Christian was born on 10 May 1821 at Claushagen. He was a peasant.

They settled at Braunschweig, Mnxesha, in the King Williams Town District.

On 16 June 1885 he bought the farm “Thorn Valley” in Macleantown for 400 pounds from a Mr. Phillips. The size of the farm being 1089 acres.

Christian died at Thorn Valley on 10 January 1921 (99 yrs 8 months) and was buried at the Macleantown Cemetery.

Wilhelmine was born in Bucholz, Germany on 22 November 1819. Her parents were Franz Vetter and Dorothea Prettin. She left her husband. She died 6 June 1900 and is buried at Braunschweig Cemetery.
