Willie (60), was murdered on his smallholding plot in Haakdoringboom, Pretoria on 6th January 2004.

A very shocked Mr. Quinton Smit (72) from Pretoria told yesterday how he escaped death in the smallholding attack in which his wife, Elsie (52), was severely assaulted and his friend Mr. Willie Henderson (61) was killed.

Their neighbours found Henderson's body in a storage room near the house shortly after the attack. He was severely assaulted and allegedly beaten repeatedly with a blunt object.

Henderson lived with the Smit couple on the farm at Haakdoornboom, north of Pretoria.

The two men were watching television the night before yesterday at around 19:30 when three armed men entered through an open kitchen door. One pointed a revolver at him and demanded firearms. "'If you lie to me, I'll kill you,' he told me." That's when the man pulled the weapon's trigger without firing a shot. "They were very aggressive," said Mr. Smith said.

According to insp. Police spokesman Percy Morokane said the robbers tied up the men and ransacked the house. Three television sets, a microwave oven and radios were looted. "The suspects must have known the intent on the farm because they were waiting for Mrs. Smit when she came back from work later," said Morokane.

Mrs. Smit, a receptionist, came home around 20:30. The attackers also tied her up and assaulted her. "She was lying tied next to me in the living room and I saw how they battered her in front of me," said her husband.

The thugs took her handbag and revolver and went outside with Henderson. There they loaded their booty, which also included power tools, onto his pick-up truck, with which they later fled.
