Willem (68), a staff member at Farmhouse Butchery, Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Durban North was shot in the head during a robbery on 04/02/2006.
According to Inspector Michael Read of the South African Police Service, five men had entered the butchery. "One posed as a customer, asking for brisket," said Read. As Marais leaned over to get the meat, the man shot him in the head at close range. "They went behind the counter, removed R5000 from the till, and fled," said Read.
At the corner of Orthman Drive and Umhlanga Rocks Drive the five men then hijacked a white Volkswagen Golf, driven by Beryl Pollard (83). Pollard said she had gone shopping. "As I got to the top of the road, and put my handbrake on, I looked across the road and saw three men." She thought they looked suspicious, and locked the door. One of the men walked over and told her to get out. "I told him I wouldn't, and put my hand through the window to push him away." He grabbed her hand and dragged it. "We were pulling backwards and forwards. "He took the skin off my arm, but I still refused to get out... Then he took out a gun and I thought, 'Oh my stars'." The man smashed the window with his gun. "Some of the glass cut my face a little." One of the other men then pulled out a knife. They opened the door and threw her on to the pavement. She is terribly concerned that the police might not get the car back. "It belongs to my granddaughter, Joanne."
