January 16, 1862 he was appointed Quartermaster General upon the resignation of Jonathan B Bruce.
His home was purchased in 1861 by his father-in-law, Connecticut Governor William Alfred Buckingham as a gift and in 1867 it was enlarged. The Aiken family resided there until it was sold in 1940 by his daughter Mary. The original structure was built circa 1799 and the home still stands, located at 157 Washington Street, called the "Learned-Aiken House" in Norwich, Connecticut.
