About William Ainsworth

Initial military service with Greymouth Volunteers. NZ Permanent Militia from 5/12/1892 till July 1894 Service number 544. Transferred to Police Force served as constable in Christchurch. On 7 August 1896 rejoined NZ Permanent Militia as Gunner 3rd Class Service number 765. Stationed in Wellington. In 1899 promoted to Gunner 2nd Class. In 1902 transferred to Royal NZ Artillery (Permanent Force) Promoted to Gunner 1907. In April 1908 was transferred from RNZA to the Militia Staff until 1 September 1912 when he was reposted to the RNZA as a supernumerary, granted the honorary rank of Staff Sergeant Major and employed as orderly to His Excellency the Governor (Governor General from 1917). Received Long Service & Good Conduct Medal 18/8/1916. Received Long & Meritorious Service Medal 21/12/1920. Received Long & Efficient Service Medal 2/5/1921
